Making Mastodon a Federated Twitter clone made a lot of sense at the start - it helped new users map the features to something they knew.
But Mastodon is established, and should now begin differentiating based on features and not just federation (which users still often don’t understand). Now is the time for Mastodon to launch proper Article support:Long posts - Articles can be created and viewed in the timeline Support for rendering Markdown, even if that’s limited to Article types Possibly allow admins to opt-out of article support if they really want plaint-text only.
These changes would let Mastodon (and other federated systems) market themselves and Twitter-plus, not just Twitter-equivalent, and would provide a boost to new blogging platforms like plume and write.as.
It would also bring pleroma and Mastodon closer in some superficial ways and would let us show folks that the fediverse can actually give users a richer experience, not just a different experience.
I know the respective creators have other disagreements about some real privacy issues, but we hate it when mommy and daddy fight 😭
